How to Paint Formica Cabinets

By

Painting is not that much difficult, but if you go for painting on Formica you may have hard time doing so if you don’t know properly how to do so. This article will deal with about how to paint Formica cabinets.

Necessary Things to Buy

For painting on Formica cabinets, you will have to purchase some things in order to paint properly. You should manage all these things beforehand, otherwise you’ll find it very difficult to manage the things during the painting process. The first thing that you should go for is paint color and type. Then you can go for quality primer.

A good cleaner like TSP is also a thing that should be in your buying list. Screwdriver may be needed to unscrew as well as screw the screws used in the hinges of the cabinet. Be health conscious and for this buy face mask as well as goggles.

Preparation

There is some preparation that you will have to take before painting on Formica cabinets. The first thing you must do is just segregate the things such doors, drawers along with other things like pulls and knobs form the main body of the cabinet to make it very light so that you can take it to a place where are you will paint. It is always recommended that you take the cabinet to another place for painting because you don’t want to mess up the surrounding area of the cabinet  with paint drops and other dusts. For removing hardware, you can use a screwdriver. Keep all the hardware in a safe place so that you can get it back after painting to add on the cabinet.

Clean and Sand

The next thing you should do is clean the cabinet and for cleaning, use TSP. After cleaning properly, sand with a fine grit sandpaper. Sand gently so that you can be sure that there is no hard scratch on the Formica surface.

Prime

After sanding, you have to use the first coat of primer. Primer is the key thing that will attach the paint with the Formica strongly. So you should be very much careful in priming well on the cabinet. You will go for the  second coat of primer after the first coat of priming if the first coat is not adequate. After each of the primers coats, leave reasonable time to cure the primer, otherwise these will flake away within a very short time.

Paint

Painting is the final part of the procedure. Use a paint brush or roller or paint sprayer for finishing the painting procedure. A paintbrush is less likely to give better results where as roller or paint sprayer, you will end up with a very decent result. The best result can be achieved through using a paint sprayer, but if you are going through a tough budget, then you can use a roller instead. You shouldn’t use the paint brush for the whole process because brush leaves uneven marks on the surface. You should use a paint brush for reaching some of the corners on the Formica surface. There might be some joints which are not very easy to reach, and for this paintbrush will give a very good solution for that.

After you finish painting, give much time to cure the painting properly. if you need the second coat of paint, don’t ignore to do this. After your painting coat is dried up completely you can take the the cabinet alog with the other parts to its original place. After taking to the original place, you can attach all the parts to the main body of the cabinet.
