Preparation
Preparation is necessary for doing anything in a better way, so take some preparation beforehand in order to make the painting result better. Unlike other painting procedure for large objects’ painting, door knob’s painting needs a little effort as it is involved with little object.
You will need to buy less amount of paint, primer and a piece of sandpaper or to in order to complete the whole process of painting your door knobs. In addition, you can buy TSP or tri-sodium phosphate as a cleaner to clean your knob well. Buy a tack cloth for wiping purpose and for painting you will have to use paintbrush or paint sprayer, but for painting your door knob, you can not use a roller.
To paint well and comfortably, you must remove the door knob from the door and for this reason, you will have to use screwdriver.
Buy all the mentioned things beforehand as buying any of the items during your painting process will hamper the painting process a lot.
How to Paint?
Now we are going to discuss about how one can paint his or her door knob with the painting materials that have been mentioned in the earlier part.
Step 1.
This step is involved with the removing process of the knob from the door where it is fixed. Use a screwdriver and follow the screws which stick the knob with the door. After finding out the screws, rotate the screwdriver correctly in order to remove the knob from the door. Once you have removed the knob, take it to somewhere else where you are going to paint it. It is better to paint a door knob on a table or on such a thing that has the same height of a reading table. If you are going to use a reading table that you use for your reading purpose, must spread some table cloth on it to avoid any type of paint stains on the table.
If your table gets paint stain, that will be useless, so take care of that.
Step 2.
In this step, clean the knob well, and to do so, pour some TSP and mix with water. This combination will make a very good cleaning agent. Use a useless toothbrush to rub the knob with the cleaning material well. By this way, you can get the knob free from dust and other filthy things.
Step 3.
You can make a cup board with hard paper so that you can place the knob perfectly in order to paint well. If you can place well, you could paint well. So place the knob well.
Step 4.
Now start sanding the surface with a fine grit sandpaper. As the item, door knob is very small in size, you should take care of your hands and fingers from any rough friction with the sandpaper. If the knob is made of wood or metal, then you will have to sand until it gets an even tone all over the surface. If it is a plastic knob, you must sand with finer sandpaper as plastic needs less sanding.
Step 5.
Like all the other types of painting, for painting a door knob, you will have to prime well. Here are some considerable things that you must look at for different types of knobs such as plastic, wood or metal. Wood primer is the most common type of primer, but in case of metal or plastic, you will have to use dedicated primers for metal or plastic. If you use any primer on metal or plastic, that will not give you a perfect result.
As the knob is not a thing that is very big enough, you should take a small paintbrush and dip it into the specific type of primer for each of the material. Brush on the knob gently and then leave it for several hours to a day to cure the primer completely. Second coat of priming may be needed if the first coat does not give perfect solution. If the second coat of priming is needed, you must do that following the first coat.
Step 6.
Once you have completed the priming job, you are now come to the stage of painting. For the painting job, you may consider a paint brush or a paint sprayer. Paint sprayer will surely give you the top-notch painting result by leaving no marks whereas a paintbrush will obviously leave some subtle bristle’s marks on the surface of the door knob.
You have another choice of using spray cans for the painting through sprays. Use a spray can that is filled with specific paint for metal or plastic or wood.
Keep in mind that paint for metal or plastic is totally different than for wood, so if your door knob is made of metal or plastic, then you will have to use the paint that will suit the material. Ask the hardware shopkeeper for providing dedicated paint for metal or plastic, he or she could help you a lot in this regards.
After the painting job is done, you keep the knob in a dry and cool place in order to dry that completely. Try to keep it a place which is also free from much air and dust because this type of environment is prone to sticking dust. If you let the knob stick with dust before drying up completely, you will spoil the painting by mixing it with dirt.
Step 7.
In the end of your painting job, attach the door knob in the previous position of the door. If the earlier screws are damages or old enough to use, buy new ones to fix the knob robustly with the door.
