On the other hand, you need not do anything if the furniture is made of metal because the filling process is done with metal primer.
Necessary thing (s) for the step: Wood Filler and Putty Knife.
Sand/Scrap the Surface with Sandpaper
You cannot deny this part as without proper sanding on the furniture, you cannot have the best paint on it. There are different grits sandpaper available out thereon the market. Choose 180 grit sandpaper to sand well. This will remove the previous primer and paint coating.
Primer sticks to main wood of the furniture, so you must find the wood by rubbing away the primer coat from the furniture.
For a metal finished furniture, you will have to work more by scraping the thick coat. You must scrap until you reach the bare metal of the furniture that is made of metal.

Use Coat of Primer
Primer is the coat that relates the main surface with the paint that will be used. So it has great value, that is why you will have to prime well on the furniture as to make sure that the painting will be outstanding.
For wooden furniture, you can use usual primer as the stickiness of primer on this type of furniture is easier than that of metal finished furniture.
Buy a quality primer and use a brush or roller for priming on the surface of the furniture. It is better to give the coat of the primer with a roller or a paint sprayer. Afterwards, you should use a small brush to pass the primer to the tough portion of the furniture such as narrow edges and cones.
For metal furniture, using a usual primer is not adequate as you will have hard time sticking to the primer on the metal surface. As the bare metal is too slippery to adhesion, you will have to use those types of primer that are intended uniquely for metal use. For this purpose, the best fit is a DTM (Direct to Metal) primer which will stick to the bare metal strongly.
The complete drying of the primer coat, whether it is for wood or metal, is necessary for painting on the primer. To do so, you must allow adequate time to dry the primer. After fully cure of the primer coat, if it is necessary to use another coat, never ignore that. You will have to use more than one coat of primer if it is needed.
Necessary thing (s) for the step: Primer, Brush, Roller or Paint Sprayer
Sand Gently
After you notice that the primer has dried completely and formed hard enough, use fine grit sandpaper to sand gently on the primed surface. Be careful while sanding as to make sure that you are not rubbing away the priming coat. If you do it accidentally, then you will have to use prime coat again which will make trouble.
Go for all the rough edges and fix those with the fine grit sandpaper. You will stop sanding once you see that there is no rough mark left on the primed surface of the furniture.
Necessary thing (s) for the step: Fine Grit Sandpaper.
